What we do


An innovative platform for strengthening the capacity of stakeholders within a destination.


GEOTEX is a joint initiative of the World Centre of Excellence for Destinations (CED) and the Multilateral Development Fund 

(MIF) of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), a member of the World Bank Group.


Partnership

The implementation of the GEOTEX platform is performed at the local or regional level by CED in close cooperation 

with a training and research institution serving the destination.

The role of local partner is twofold: (i) develop content adapted to the reality of the community and (ii) act as a liaison 

with tourism stakeholders in the destination.


CED is responsible for the continuous development of GEOTEX, and for the sharing of knowledge and best practices 

among the different destinations using the platform.

Tools


Self-assessment tool: designed to allow tourism stakeholders to perform a self-assessment of their knowledge on a range 

of priority issues for the destination.


Online training tool: designed to strengthen the capacities of destination management organizations (DMOs), including trainers 

and educators, DMO officials, and micro, small and medium tourism enterprises (MSMEs).


Entrepreneurship tool: designed to assist entrepreneurs seeking to start a micro or small tourism business or to strengthen 

their existing business. 


Beneficiaries


Tourism stakeholders: 
By using GEOTEX, DMOs and their stakeholders send a strong message to development banks or other development agencies 

that they are committed to strengthening their capacities.

Training and research institutions: 
GEOTEX adds value to each component of their role: teaching, research and services to the community.

Development banks or other development agencies: 
By strengthening the capacity of tourism stakeholders, GEOTEX contributes to maximizing those stakeholders’ return 

on investment.
